How to Convert a PDF to Structured JSON

1

Drop or Select Your PDF

Drag a single PDF onto the upload zone or click to pick it from your device. Everything happens locally; the file is never uploaded.

2

Extract Text and Layout

ZentoPDF reads every page with PDF.js, collects each text item plus its page number, x/y position, width and font size, and assembles the result into a normalised JSON tree.

3

Download the .json File

Click download to grab a clean .json file you can stream into a database, vector index, LLM prompt or any custom script.

Frequently Asked Questions

What does the output JSON look like?

The file contains a top-level array of pages, each with its page number and a list of text items. Every item carries the raw string, x and y coordinates, width, height and font size, so you have enough information to rebuild the layout or feed it into a structured indexer.

Is the JSON suitable for LLMs and RAG pipelines?

Yes. The output preserves reading order per page and includes positional metadata, so you can chunk the JSON intelligently for vector embedding, retrieval-augmented generation or any other LLM workflow without re-parsing the PDF on the server side.

Does it work on scanned PDFs?

Scanned PDFs are images of text and contain no selectable characters, so the JSON would be empty. To extract their content, first run them through our OCR PDF tool — it recognises the text and writes it back into the PDF, which then converts to JSON normally.

Are my PDFs uploaded anywhere?

No. The whole extraction happens client-side in your browser with PDF.js. Your original PDF and the resulting JSON never leave your device, so the tool is safe for confidential financial, legal or research documents.

Is there a page or file size limit?

No artificial limits — only the memory of your device. Modern laptops comfortably extract JSON from PDFs with hundreds of pages, and the tool is 100% free with no signup or watermark.
