How to Remove Metadata from a PDF

1

Drop or Select Your PDF

Drag a PDF onto the upload zone or pick it from your device. The file is processed locally in your browser; nothing is uploaded.

2

Strip All Document Information

ZentoPDF clears the /Info dictionary (author, title, subject, keywords, producer, creator, dates) and removes the XMP metadata stream, leaving only the page content behind.

3

Download the Sanitized PDF

Click download to grab a new PDF with no identifying metadata left. Share it publicly, attach it to forms or upload it to portals without revealing who, when or with which app you created it.

Frequently Asked Questions

Which fields are removed?

ZentoPDF clears every standard /Info entry (Author, Title, Subject, Keywords, Producer, Creator, CreationDate, ModDate) and deletes the XMP metadata stream that stores extended properties (custom tags, software fingerprints, edit history). The visible page content is untouched.

Why is removing metadata important?

PDF metadata often leaks your real name, organisation, computer username, exact creation time and the software used. Stripping it before posting documents online, attaching them to legal filings or sending them to clients is a basic privacy and OPSEC best practice.

Does it remove hidden form data or annotations?

No, those live in different PDF structures. Use our Remove Annotations tool to remove comments and highlights, or our Sanitize PDF tool for a full cleanup (metadata + scripts + embedded files + annotations + hidden text in one pass).

Are my files uploaded?

No. All metadata stripping happens locally in your browser using pdf-lib. Your original PDF and the sanitized output never leave your device.

Will the visible content of my PDF change?

No. The page content (text, images, layout) is identical to the original. Only the invisible metadata layer is wiped, so the document looks exactly the same to anyone opening it.
